General Dwight D. Eisenhower famously said, “What is important is seldom urgent, and what is urgent is seldom important.” This simple but profound insight led to a powerful tactical tool for prioritization and decision-making, now known as the Eisenhower Matrix.
The matrix divides all of your tasks into four quadrants, helping you quickly identify what to do, what to plan, what to delegate, and what to drop altogether.
1. The “DO” Quadrant: Urgent & Important
This is the quadrant of crises and deadlines. These tasks require immediate attention and are critical to your goals.
- Tactical Action: DO IT NOW. This is where you put out fires, respond to emergencies, and meet critical deadlines. Your goal should be to minimize the number of tasks that fall into this quadrant by being proactive.
2. The “PLAN” Quadrant: Important & Not Urgent
This is the most crucial quadrant for long-term success and growth. These tasks are not pressing, but they are vital to your goals.
- Tactical Action: SCHEDULE IT. This is where you put strategic planning, skill development, relationship building, exercise, and preventative maintenance. These tasks require dedicated time. By spending more time here, you prevent them from becoming urgent crises later on.
3. The “DELEGATE” Quadrant: Urgent & Not Important
These tasks are urgent but don’t require your specific skills or attention. They are often interruptions from others.
- Tactical Action: DELEGATE IT. For a manager, this means assigning the task to the right person. For an individual, it means respectfully saying no or finding a way to automate it. Your goal is to protect your time and energy for the truly important tasks.
4. The “DELETE” Quadrant: Not Urgent & Not Important
These are the time-wasters. They provide little to no value and don’t help you move toward your goals.
- Tactical Action: DELETE IT. This is where you put endless social media scrolling, unnecessary meetings, and distracting television. Your goal is to eliminate these tasks from your life completely.

Your Tactical Mission
The Eisenhower Matrix isn’t just a to-do list; it’s a framework for a better life. The most successful people spend the majority of their time in Quadrant 2, working on the important, but not yet urgent, tasks. By focusing on planning and prevention, they avoid the constant stress of the urgent quadrant.
Start today. Grab a piece of paper and divide it into four squares. Sort your to-do list into the quadrants and make a conscious, tactical decision about every single task. You’ll be surprised by how much more you can achieve.
