However, health specialists assert that there is no credible scientific backing to the claim that this drink can dramatically mitigate stress or aid in weight loss by lowering cortisol levels. Nevertheless, the components do offer tangible nutritional value that could benefit the consumer, according to CBS News.

“As soon as I reviewed the ingredients, I immediately recognized it as resembling a standard electrolyte beverage,” commented Lindsay Malone, an integrative and functional medicine dietitian who also serves as a nutrition educator at Case Western Reserve University. She further elaborated, “The combination of juice, sodium, and potassium, along with modest amounts of sugar and electrolytes in liquid form, leads me to speculate that the perceived benefits might be largely due to dehydration alleviation. People may be experiencing a spike in blood sugar coupled with the rehydration effects of the electrolytes. That could very well be part of its appeal.”

Unveiling Cortisol’s True Nature

According to Byrne, the so-called cortisol cocktail represents one of the many wellness fads that may appeal to individuals searching for an answer to complex health concerns like stress, yet it lacks scientific substantiation. “It may seem enticing, but the claims just don’t hold up,” she said.

While the drink isn’t a miraculous fix for stress or weight loss, Malone concedes that it is relatively harmless and contains ingredients with some health advantages. For instance, orange juice provides vitamin C, bolstering immune function. Coconut water is hydrating and rich in potassium, as is the cream of tartar, another component commonly added to the mix. Meanwhile, sea salt can restore sodium levels when electrolytes are depleted.

Nevertheless, these benefits can be sourced from whole foods, which offer additional nutrients. Zenker points out that fruit juice and coconut water, though high in sugar, lack the fiber found in whole fruits. She adds that most individuals already meet their sodium requirements but may benefit from consuming potassium-rich fruits and vegetables, as well as magnesium from whole grains and legumes.
