Harvard’s International Admissions Revoked by U.S. Government 

Harvard is working to protect international students by preparing for a legal case against the Trump administration’s order. 

United States: In a dramatic move Thursday, the Trump administration forced Harvard University to cancel international student admissions and warned that those already enrolled could lose their legal visa status unless they transfer schools, as reported by Reuters. 

Noem Halts Visa Program Participation 

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem instructed her department to remove Harvard from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Noem accused the university of promoting violence, harboring antisemitic sentiments, and conspiring with the Chinese Communist Party. 

Harvard Pushes Back: Calls Action Retaliatory and Illegal 

Harvard immediately declared that it opposes the order, saying that the action by the administration is unlawful and only aimed at punishment. In the university’s opinion, this choice comes from its unwillingness to give Homeland Security the data it demanded about some international students. 

Thousands of Students Impacted 

According to Harvard, international students made up 27% of its 2024–2025 student body—nearly 6,800 individuals. The policy shift puts their academic futures and legal status in jeopardy. 

Noem: “Not a Right, But a Privilege” 

In a statement, Noem justified the move by saying U.S. universities should not profit from foreign tuition dollars while allegedly supporting harmful ideologies. 

Harvard Reaffirms Its Global Mission 

Harvard vowed to support its international students and is actively developing a plan to protect their education. The university said this political maneuver undermines the values of academic freedom and global scholarship. 

Trump’s Broader Campaign Against Elite Institutions 

President Trump defended the decision as part of a wider crackdown on private institutions he claims are aligned with “anti-American” and leftist ideologies. Harvard, with its Democratic ties and prominent liberal voices, has been a frequent target, as reported by Reuters. 

Harvard Vows to Fight Back 

Despite the federal pressure, Harvard remains committed to its global student body and is exploring legal options to challenge the administration’s move.
