A Deadly Virus With More Than 50% Fatality Rate Is Back & Spreading Fast, Experts Rush

16th Ebola outbreak, with 15 deaths among 28 suspected cases, has been reported in DRC including four healthcare workers.

A fresh Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is believed to have caused 15 deaths among 28 people showing symptoms, the country’s health ministry announced on Thursday.

This marks Congo’s 16th Ebola outbreak. Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba warned that the fatality rate of 53.6% highlights how serious the situation is.

The only confirmed case so far is a 34-year-old pregnant woman from Boulapé, a town in southern Kasai province. Investigations are still underway for the other suspected cases.

“Right now, the provisional report lists 28 suspected infections and 15 deaths — 14 in Boulapé and one in Mweka — along with four health care workers affected,” Kamba said.

Those infected have shown symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and heavy bleeding, according to reports by CNN.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it has sent experts to Kasai province to assist Congo’s Rapid Response Team. Their mission is to improve disease monitoring, patient care, and infection control at health facilities. WHO has also delivered protective gear, mobile lab equipment, and other medical supplies.

Congo currently has both treatments and the Ervebo Ebola vaccine in reserve, according to WHO.

“We are moving quickly to stop the virus from spreading and to protect communities,” said Dr. Mohamed Janabi, WHO’s regional director for Africa, as per CNN.

Ebola is a highly contagious virus that spreads through direct contact with body fluids such as blood, vomit, or semen. It causes a rare but severe illness in humans that is often deadly.
